Dear KRI Member,
As we usher in the new Lunar Year of the Rat, may I take this opportunity to wish all members and their families a very Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2008. I hope that among the New Year resolutions you might have made this year is one that includes running regularly, joining in Kelab Roadrunners (KRI) activities and staying fit and healthy together with other Club members.
This is an especially auspicious year for KRI as 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of our Club. Plans are already under way to celebrate this major milestone for the Club, to make this a truly memorable year for us all. Among the events and activities we have lined up are community projects such as a blood donation campaign, “Healthy Heart, Healthy Lifestyle” seminar, “Rat Race 2008″, a charity fun run to raise funds for the needy, as well as a membership drive that will showcase KRI as THE premier running club in the state of Perak. Members who have been with the Club for 20 years, stuck with us through thick and thin, and ”grown old” with the Club will be rewarded, along with others who have served the Club in one way or another over the course of the last 20 years. This will be a year not only of celebration, but also of recognition and appreciation.
Sports is a wonderful way of bringing together people of all ages, races and social backgrounds in the community, and running is particularly appealing as there is practically no barrier to entry, costs next to nothing yet provides one of the most beneficial aerobic workouts to the body. Lately, KRI has widened its horizons to also include cycling into our schedule of activities, as it has proven to be very popular among Club members and the community.
To kick off the New Year, we are delighted to bring to you the LeRun Ipoh Mountain Bike Fellowship Ride 2008, sponsored by LeRun Malaysia and jointly organised by KRI and Ipoh Cyclists Fellowship. This exciting and challenging event, to be held on March 23rd, will cover a distance of 40km of on road and off road cycling and participants can look forward to a thrilling route that has been specially planned to ensure satisfaction for cyclists of all levels.
Hot on the heels of that event will be KRI Annual 10 Mile Run in Batu Gajah, followed by the Century Ride (another cycling event), and later in the year, the KRI Annual 12km Race, which is the highlight of the Club’s racing calendar. In between these major events, we will continue to have the regular 1.5 mile fitness runs, celebration runs and racing clinics and seminars all designed to promote running and fitness among Club members.
The watchword for 2008 is “Fit for Life!” and all our activities will be based on this theme.
We will also organise more social events this year, which will include outings, trips, “makan makan” gatherings, and of course the perennial favourite, karaoke evenings. Yes indeed, this will be a year of celebration and we invite all members to join in the celebrations with us.
In order to help us keep in constant contact with Club members, we shall be compiling an updated Members’ Directory for 2008. We seek your co-operation in providing us with your latest contact information to ensure you do not miss out on the Club’s latest news! Club members are reminded that membership subscriptions of RM60 for two years are now due. Kindly pay to any committee member if you have not done so, and be sure to ask for your receipt.
In conjunction with KRI’s much valued sponsor and partner, Brooks, we are coming up with our very own official Club running vest as well as an official Club collared shirt complete with our 20th annniversary logo. Our thanks and appreciation to Brooks for sponsoring this project, and for its long-standing support and partnership with KRI over the last ten years. We look forward to a mutually rewarding and meaningful collaboration between KRI and Brooks for many more years to come. Thank you, Brooks!
Last but not least, the Club’s 20th Annual General Meeting will be held in grand style this year, with a dinner and dance in conjunction with the AGM formalities, complete with lucky draw prizes and a full scale entertainment programme.
The success of these events, and of the Club as a whole, depends very much on the full participation and involvement of each and every KRI member. We look forward to celebrating KRI’s 20th anniversary with you all. Remember: No you, no club! So do come along and join in our activities! The usually quiet little village of Tanjong Rambutan, Perak,will come alive on 23 March, 2008 when the LeRun Ipoh Mountain Bike Fellowship Ride 2008 winds its way in the sleepy hollow.
This exciting event, which promises to be a treat for all cycling enthusiasts, novices and veterans alike, will offer attractive Brooks cool-max t-shirts worth RM59.90 for all participants.In addition, there will also be an array of mouth wateringly irresistible lucky draw prizes courtesy of LeRun, the title sponsor of the event.These include a top of the range Giant XTC bike frame worth RM1,000, Michelin tyre, helmets, polygon cycling jerseys and other accessories.
The even is now into its very successful third year, having debuted in 2005 and meeting with overwhelming response again the following year.Sponsored this year by LeRun Malaysia (LeRun), and organised with the support of Kelab Roadrunners Ipoh (KRI), Perak’s premier club dedicated to the sport of running and, recently,also cycling, this year’s event promises to be bigger and better in every way.
“KRI President Mr Chong Him Shoong, acknowledged LeRun as “a great supporter of sports, particularly cycling,in Perak, without whose sponsorship the event would not have been possible”.
“More and more people are taking up cycling, whether as a leisure pursuit, a fun way to exercise, or even as a competitive sport”, Chong said.
“However, there needs to be races and other similar activities and events which draw the community together and which give them the platform to strive for their competitive best.Such events can only be organised with help from the Government and from corporate sponsors, in order to encourage more people to participate.
“I am impressed that LeRun is one such private company that recognises this need and has come forward to support the event in such a big way.We are expecting more than 1,000 participants from all over Malaysia and even outside Malaysia in this third outing”, Chong added.
LeRun Director, Mr Liew Keng Yap,on his part said that LeRun was proud and delighted to be part of what he considered to be “a fantastic opportunity for all cycling enthusiasts throughout Ipoh and to explore a new and exciting route that has been created by KRI”.
“I understand that the route will be exciting and interesting, taking in many lesser known local sightseeing spots and even passing through some of the few remaining Orang Asli settlements in the region.
This is a unique way for Malaysians and foreigners alike to discover lesser known parts of the beautiful state of Perak:”,Liew said.
Chong said that participants can look forward to an exciting new route in Ulu Kinta, near the historical town of Tanjung Rambutan, which would be both scenic and challenging.
“Along the 45km long route, cyclists will be able to take in the lush greenery and natural landscape for which Perak is famous.Glide through quiet roads, negotiate dirt tracks in single file, whizz down trail descends, suffer up lung-bursting seemingly endless hills and pass through picturesque Orang Asli villages.. it will be a ride filled with many interesting twists and turns.
“We may even throw in a stream crossing or two - just for good measure!” he grinned.
Chong added that there would be opportunities to mingle with the locals.”Who knows, they might even invite you into their homes for white coffee! One cup and all the agonies of the ride will be forgotten”, he promised.
So… come for the Ride, stay for the white coffee and take away some really sweet memories.
